There are many plants hamsters can eat. This is a list of a few of them. Luckily, most of them can be found in your back garden.
- grass
- dandelions
- indian cress( leaves and flower )
- starflower
- beetroot (whole plant )
- clover ( not flower )
- parsley
- mint
- spider plant
- rose petals
- marigold
Marsh mariigold and pot marigold is poisonous. Only some kinds are safe for hamsters.
- true bamboo ( note, most bamboos sold in the market are not true bamboo. Many get mislabed. )

- deadly nightshade
- angels trumpet
- english ivy
- all kinds of lilies
- orchids
- bluebells
- hiacynth
- tulips
- evergreen
- oak leaves
- hazel leaves
What plants can you put in a hamsters cage ?
If you put a plant in a hamsters cage, they are likely to chew on it. If your hamster is very active and inquisitive, its best not to put a plant in their cage . I had to learn the hard way. When I put the plant inside my hammies cage, she knocked it over. I had to spend 1 hour cleaning the soil out of her cage ! Well, here are some plants I recommend putting in your hamsters cage ( if they are not like mine ).
- Grass
Grass is a great option. Most hamsters like it and you can just dig one up that in your garden or growing on a street.
- Indian cress
Most hamsters like indian cress. The only problem is that they grow to be quite big so the space they take up could be used for something more useful. You can place young ones inside the hammies cage and then remove it when it gets bigger.
- Marigold
Marigold is a good plant to consider. Only, they like direct sunlight, while hamsters can not be in sunlight. You could move the plant pot or hamsters cage to a sunny spot while you play with your hamster or your hamster runs in her / his ball. Marigolds are a great addition to the cage and bring a burst of colour.
